Shymkent is situated on a junction connecting Tashkent with Kazakhstan. Southern Kazakhstan’s Sufi heritage consists of the mausoleum of Yasawi towering out above Turkistan. Numerous other Sufi mausoleums dot the desert. Visit is not completed without seeing the ruins of Otrar and Sauran. Taraz and Zhambyl (Jambyl) oblast, medieval mausoleums, and parks sheltering tulips, birds, mountains and nomads hunting with Eagles in nearby town of Merki (Merke). They are the majority of the population of Tatarstan, one of the constituent republics of Russia. During the 11th-16th centuries, numerous Turkic tribes lived in what is now Russia and Kazakhstan. The present territory of Tatarstan was inhabited by the Volga Bulgars, a people whose origins are uncertain, but who scholars consider to have been Turkic. The Bulgars settled on the Volga River in the 8th century and converted to Islam in 922 during the missionary work of Ahmad ibn Fadlan. On the Volga, the Bulgars mingled with Scythian and Finno-Ugric speaking peoples. After the Mongol invasion of Europe from 1241, Volga Bulgaria was defeated, ruined, and incorporated into the Golden Horde.

Qajimuqan Mungaytpasuli was 174 cm tall and weighed 95 kg. He fought in 54 countries, won 48 medals. One of the most important moments in his carrier was a year 1910 - in Buenos Aires he got the golden medal and was a World Champion for the first time. One of his famous victories was the defeat of Japanese jiu-jitsu master Harakiki Jindofu, who did not survive the fatal injury of the spine he received during the fight. He died in 1948 in Lyeninskoe znamya kolkhoz (South Kazakhstan Province), not having any disciples and learners and leaving his four wives in Turkestan. In 1980 his museum was opened.
